King Ludwig II

Ludwig was a monarch who enjoyed dining at an unrivalled level, hosting sumptuous feasts with lavish banquets and sourcing the best ingredients from all over the world. He initially celebrated his birthdays in the wonderfully scenic Hohenschwangau; in later years in the stylish Turkish Hall in his stately royal house on the Schachen.

According to the writer Luise von Kobell: “The king occasionally sat in Turkish robes on sumptuous carpets, sipping mocha and arrack and puffing on a water pipe.” Theodor Hierneis, the king’s court chef, reports in his records that Ludwig dined just as lavishly and stylishly during his mountain parties and at the hunting lodges as he did in the palaces. A mocha was always served after a fine meal.
